Become: Making care better

25 April 2024

BECOME are giving children in care and young care leavers the opportunity to call on the next government to make care better.

Who is Become?

BECOME are a charity for children in care and young care leavers. Become believe that care should provide the opportunity to take a breath in a safe environment, but most entering care feel alone, overwhelmed, and let down by the system that is supposed to be taking care of them.  They say they struggle to get the support they’re legally entitled to, having to fight for a safe roof over their heads, for money, clothes, bedding, and necessities.

Children in care rarely get favours or leg-ups. When they succeed it is often despite the system, not because of it.

What is their manifesto?

- Urgently reform the care system, so every child has the love, care and stability they need.

- Make children’s relationships a key consideration in all decisions.

- End the care cliff so young people can make a positive start to adulthood.

- Improve the support provided to children and young people by other public services.

- Put young people’s voices at the heart of the care system.

How can you get involved?

You can get involved through tweeting to your local MP, writing a letter to your local MP, sharing posts on social media, and signing the open letter which can be accessed on the Become website.
